Healthy Dashain and Tihar Feasting: Enjoy the Festival Without Upsetting Your Stomach

Does this happen to you every festival? 🤔

Day 1: “Just one more piece of meat!” Day 3: “Why is my stomach so heavy?” Day 5: “Gas, acidity, and no appetite…”

You are not alone! Almost every family faces this during Dashain and Tihar. The good news: you do not have to give up your favorite food. You just have to eat smartly. ✅

🔥 Why does festival food upset our stomach?

Ayurveda says our digestion depends on Agni, the digestive fire. Think of it like a cooking fire. If you keep throwing heavy, oily, sweet food into it again and again, the fire becomes weak, and you get indigestion, gas, and heaviness.

There is one more reason. This is Sharad Ritu (autumn), when Pitta is already high after the monsoon. Spicy food, fried food, and alcohol add fuel to this fire, bringing acidity and burning in the chest.

Modern science agrees: too much fat and sugar for many days stresses the stomach and raises blood sugar. 🍬

✨ 8 Simple Tips to Feast Without Regret

  1. Never go to a feast very hungry 🚫

Drink a glass of warm water or eat a small fruit first. You will eat less and enjoy more.

  1. Follow the “half plate” rule 🍽️

Fill half your plate with dal, vegetables, and salad. Take meat, fried food, and sweets in small portions. Taste everything, but don’t finish everything!

  1. Stop at three-quarters full 🛑

Ayurveda says: leave some space in your stomach. This is the secret of good digestion.

  1. Start with a ginger slice 🫚

A thin slice of fresh ginger with a pinch of rock salt before the meal wakes up your Agni.

  1. Sip ginger or jeera water ☕

Boil a small piece of ginger or half a teaspoon of cumin (jeera) in water. Sip it warm after meals to reduce gas and bloating.

  1. Give your stomach a break ⏰

Eat again only when you feel truly hungry. Avoid heavy late-night dinners.

  1. Walk after eating 🚶

Just 10–15 minutes of gentle walking helps digestion and keeps blood sugar in check.

  1. Go easy on alcohol 🍷

Alcohol increases acidity and tires the liver. If you drink, take very little, never on an empty stomach, and drink plenty of water.

🍲 The “Reset Day” Menu: After a Heavy Feast

Your stomach needs rest after a big feast. Try:

🥣 Warm khichdi or rice with moong dal 🥕 Light vegetable soup 💧 Warm water or ginger-jeera water 🍎 Papaya or apple 🎃 Cooked pumpkin or bottle gourd

Avoid: cold drinks, ice cream, and fried snacks for a day or two.

💙 Important Note for People with Diabetes

Sel roti and festival sweets can raise sugar very quickly. Please remember:

✔️ Take your medicines or insulin on time, even on festival days ✔️ Don’t skip meals and then overeat later ✔️ Take sweets in a very small portion, after a meal, not alone ✔️ Check your blood sugar more often ✔️ Avoid alcohol, as it can cause dangerously low sugar ✔️ Walk after meals and drink enough water 🚨 When to Go to the Doctor

Don’t wait at home if you have:

Severe or continuous stomach pain Repeated vomiting or black stool Chest pain or heavy sweating Extreme thirst, confusion, or weakness with very high or low sugar

Visit the nearest health facility immediately.

🌼 Final Message

Dashain and Tihar are about family, blessings, and gratitude, and good health is the greatest blessing of all. Eat with awareness, move your body, and keep your stomach light. Then you can enjoy every tika, every feast, and every smile, and welcome the winter healthy and strong.

Wishing you and your family a healthy, happy Dashain and Tihar! 🪔🌸
